Amethyst is the ink of magic, illusion, and twisted plans. Sorcerers warp the board with bounce and exert effects, villains scheme through hand disruption and discard, and big finishers like Elsa, Spirit of Winter close out games with lockout abilities. Amethyst rewards careful timing more than raw aggression — if you like pulling strings, this is your ink.
Identity — what Amethyst represents
If Amber is Lorcana's heroes, Amethyst is its villains and sorcerers. Maleficent, Hades, Yzma, Madam Mim, Demona, the Snow White Queen — anyone who casts spells, brews potions, or hatches schemes from the shadows tends to land here. Thematically, Amethyst is purple smoke, magic mirrors, and the moment before a spell goes wrong.
The mechanics follow the theme. Amethyst characters often have enter-the-board triggers that reshape the field — bouncing characters back to hand, exerting them in place, or forcing opponents to discard. They're not the strongest fighters, but they win by changing the rules of the engagement.
Mechanical role — what Amethyst does
- Bounce. Return characters (yours or your opponent's) to hand. Great for resetting opposing threats or replaying your own cards' enter-the-board triggers.
- Exert effects. Lock opposing characters by exerting them or preventing them from readying — Elsa, Spirit of Winter's DEEP FREEZE is the iconic one.
- Hand disruption. Force the opponent to discard, peek at their hand, or otherwise erode their gameplan.
- Card filtering. Several Amethyst cards let you discard then draw, putting key pieces into the graveyard or hand for combo plays.
What Amethyst doesn't do well: rush damage and direct removal. To finish games or clear stubborn threats, Amethyst usually pairs with Ruby for damage or Steel for hard removal.

Amethyst is harder to pilot than Amber because timing matters: bouncing the wrong character or exerting at the wrong moment wastes the trigger. Start by building around one core threat — Elsa, Spirit of Winter is forgiving — and use the rest of your deck to keep the board favorable until you can land it.
If you find yourself losing to fast aggro decks, that's the matchup Amethyst struggles with the most. Pair with Steel to gain banish effects, or with Amber for healing buffer.
